UN BIG BAGS

Big bags for packaging dangerous goods

Basic Information

The UN has issued guidelines for the transport of dangerous goods, defining the durability standards and testing methods for jumbo bags intended for packaging hazardous materials. In most European countries, the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) has been adopted, which includes the UN recommendations for transporting dangerous cargo.

Types

We manufacture UN big bags of various specifications. Compared to standard FIBC bags, UN big bags are designed to be more resistant to prevent the leakage of hazardous materials. Each UN big bag has undergone testing in specialized laboratories.

Manufacturing

There are four types of UN big bags that we can produce:

  • 13H1: uncoated fabric, without a liner
  • 13H2: coated fabric, without a liner
  • 13H3: uncoated fabric, with a liner
  • 13H4: coated fabric, with a liner

UN big bags have specific limitations regarding design, dimensions, and entry methods.

Dimensions

The dimensions of UN bags must not exceed twice the size of their narrowest side, and the volume must not be greater than 3.0 m³.

Entry

UN big bags must not have an open entry or just a flap. Also, they cannot be repaired and are intended for single use.

Testing

Entry Test
The bag is filled to six times its maximum load capacity and held under that load for 5 minutes. The bag must not show any damage.

Stacking Test
The bag is filled to its maximum allowable weight, with an additional 1.8 times its maximum weight placed on top, and left for 24 hours. The test is successful if the bag does not show signs of deterioration or loss of contents.

Drop Test
The bag is filled to its maximum gross weight and dropped from a height of 1.2m (for packing group II) or 0.8m (for packing group III). There should be no loss of contents.

Tear Test
A 10 cm cut is made on a filled bag with a knife. The bag is then lifted for 5 minutes. If the cut has not expanded more than 25%, the test is successful.

Topple Test
The bag is toppled from a height of 1.2m (for packing group II) or 0.8m (for packing group III). There should be no loss of contents.

Righting Test
The bag is fully filled to its maximum weight, placed on its side, and then lifted at a speed of 0.1m/s to an upright position. There should be no damage to the bag during this test.
